George Askew, City Councillor for Carnforth and Milhead passed away unexpectedly recently and I know I speak for myself and all of George’s colleagues when I say he was very well liked as a tenacious individual and will be very much missed.
My thoughts are with his family at this dreadfully sad time.
The other week EDF announced life extensions on both of our nuclear power stations. Heysham 1 will be extended by five years to 2024 and Heysham 2 will be extended by seven years till 2030.
This is fantastic news which I have been lobbying Ministers for constantly, to ensure our jobs are protected and nuclear skills are kept locally.
While the final part of this decision is a commercial one made by EDF, if the political will is not there by the Secretary of State and if a local MP does not campaign for the industry behind the scenes we are not able to get to the point where the company has the confidence to announce extensions.
I was recently a guest of the Falklands Islands Government on a cross part visit to the island. This was the first delegation the Government had hosted since 2012 and was important to show solidarity to the people of the Falkland Islands and that their voice was still being heard by the British Government.
The Falklands is an immensely interesting place, steeped in history and I was especially pleased to be able to visit a school and their hospital to see how their services are being run.
In fact I will be meeting again with the chief officer who runs their health services to see how we can help them find a strong skills mix for their medical staff. I also visited our military base at Mount Pleasant to hear an update on the latest situation there.
