Firehouse home for rescue vehicle

Bolton-le-Sands fire station will now house a Bay Search and Rescue vehicle.

Bolton-le-Sands fire station will now house a Bay Search and Rescue vehicle.

A SPECIAL rescue vehicle which provides emergency response support in Lancashire and Cumbria is to be housed at Bolton-le-Sands fire station.

Bay Search and Rescue’s amphibious, go-anywhere caterpillar-tracked Hagglund rescue vehicles make light work of treacherous sands and are increasingly used as a transporter for personnel, water and equipment to fight moorland fires, taking the slopes and gullies of moorland terrain in their stride.

BSAR have made Bolton-le-Sands fire station an outpost for one of their Hagglunds, shaving one-and-a-half hours off response times for those incidents, such as wildfires, occurring further inland from their Flookburgh HQ.

Gary Parsons, Station Officer and Chairman of BSAR said: “Bay Search and Rescue and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have had an excellent informal working relationship for some years.

“We hope this move into Lancashire will make search and rescue, wildfire and large animal rescue a safer occupation for all.

“But we will also provide the same service to our coastal partners on the Lancashire coast as we have to those on the Cumbrian side of Morecambe Bay.”

Group Manager Tony Crook of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “BSAR is an outstanding resource staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers.

“This development is the culmination of a close look at incidents involving BSAR, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and ourselves with a view to enhancing a service that has already proved highly effective.

“As key partners in Lancashire’s multi-agency response to the threat of wildfires, a logical development was to establish a more strategically appropriate location for a BSAR team to combat that threat.

“Our fire station at Bolton-le-Sands is ideally placed.

“We are delighted to make the BSAR team welcome and look forward to our continued success as partners in the project.”
