A fire in a skip could have spread to a house nearby, officials said.

A crew from Lancaster was called to a terraced property in the city’s Dee Road at around 1.09am on Saturday, March 15, where they found the rubbish container ablaze in a front garden.

Heat from the fire caused damage to a plastic window frame on the house, said John Taylor, spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

He added: “If it had burned any longer it would have set light to the building.”

The people inside the property were alerted to the blaze when their smoke alarms were activated inside.

Firefighters were on scene for about 35 minutes.

The cause is being investigated.
