Sandcastle event is simple and successful

SOMETIMES, the simple pleasures in life are the best.

So while it’s not exactly rocket science to create a festival around the building of sandcastles on Morecambe beach, the idea has definitely been a successful one.

The sixth annual Sandcastle Festival also showed that sometimes all our seafront needs is good weather.

Past Sandcastle Festivals have been blighted by rain. Not this year. The sun shone and thousands ventured out on to the promenade with their buckets and spades.

The town was packed with people enjoying the free entertainment.

The highlight of the weekend was Sunday’s Super Sandcastle Competition, where 30 teams battled it out.

Judges had a hard task on their hands, as they struggled to decide who would win first prize.

Winners from each category won a £50 cash prize, with gold, silver and bronze medals handed out on the podium, in true Olympic style.

The Strong family from Kendal came out tops in the families/under-12s category, with Ruth and Jeremy Street from Stratford-upon-Avon winning the open category.

This year, the festival took an Olympic theme, in preparation for the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the district on Friday, June 22.

Meanwhile, Europe’s leading professional sand artists, Sand in Your Eye! , created an array of Olympic-style sculptures, while Tall Will the bubbleman impressed with his mix of bubble magic.

Over at the Winter Gardens, guests enjoyed a trip down memory lane at the Vintage Village Hall Tea Room, enjoying cream teas, music and vintage fashion.

There was also music from samba band Batala, talks and book signings by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson, and even donkey rides.

The event was organised by Lancaster City Council and sponsored by Broadoak Leisure Buildings.

Family/Under-12s: 1st: Team Strong; 2nd: It’s All Greek to me; 3rd: Neo

Open category: 1st: Streets Ahead; 2nd: And then there was one; 3rd: Team Duffy
