Nun but the brave

TWO members of the cast of the forthcoming production of The Sound of Music are taking their roles very seriously.

Kay McLaughlin (Mother Abbess) and Irene Melling (Sister Berthe) wanted to carry out some first-hand research into life in a convent, so they booked an overnight stay at the Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning in Warton.

“As Kay and I arrived at the front door, we were experiencing a range of emotions from excitement to some trepidation,” said Irene.

But the two apprentices had no need to worry as they were made to feel very welcome.

“We were shown around the house and gardens and introduced to some of the other nuns,” said Irene.

“Although the monastery welcomes people of all walks of life to stay on retreats and attend courses, we rather felt that we must have seemed like something of a novelty.”

Irene and Kay attended acts of worship with the nuns, and had the chance to ask lots of questions.

They would like to thank everyone at Hyning, and their very special experience will undoubtedly enhance their performances in the classic musical.

The Sound of Music by the Morecambe Amateur and Operatic Dramatic Society can be seen at The Grand Theatre, Lancaster, from June 19 to 23.
