Lighting up Lancaster Canal
Hundreds of people have seen Lancaster Canal in a different light.
A special light projection, art and music show called Phoenix From The Ashes delighted onlookers of all ages along the canal from Moor Lane to the Water Witch pub.
The free event, which took place last Monday and Tuesday, was commissioned by the Canal and River Trust (formerly British Waterways) to help celebrate the newly refurbished Aqueduct. Produced by The Dukes, it revealed a beautifully animated story of what the waterway means to the city, its heritage and people.
The light projections and sound installations were confined mainly to the canal bridges.
One of the first was a recording of a canal themed poem by poet Ian McMillan accompanied by quirky animated images of the Lancaster waterway.
Under another bridge were imaginative animations created by Adam Clarke who had worked with pupils from Ridge Primary School.
Another youngster, Gower Campbell, had his poem Tick Tock recreated in a huge book and it was complemented with an art installation on the canal bank opposite.
Further projections saw words and images quickly appearing and disappearing across the front of a bridge and huge projected images from Lancaster Canal’s past were screened on the side of apartment blocks opposite the White Cross pub.
A recording of a specially commissioned poem by Lancaster-based writer Daragh Carville could be heard further down the canal where photographs hung from the trees and the poem was put to music by a small band of singers performing under the final bridge.
This week’s event was the culmination of a project which began in the summer and involved youngsters from Firbank Children’s Centre, pupils from Ridge Primary School and Central Lancaster High School as well as teenagers from The Dukes Creative Learning Department at DT3 and senior citizens who meet at Ridge Community Centre.
