Famous faces return
Stars who trod the boards at the Winter Gardens in yesteryear are returning to the theatre this week...immortalised on canvas.
Portraits of Morecambe and Wise, Dame Thora Hird, Laurel and Hardy and Albert Modley will form a brand new exhibition by Morecambe artist Shane Johnstone.
This collection of Hollywood and TV greats has been handpainted in acrylics and will be displayed permanently in the main auditorium of the Winter Gardens.
Shane’s exhibition, which he painted free of charge, will be unveiled during Morecambe’s Vintage Weekend (Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9).
”It all started while I was doing plaster and mosaic restoration work in the theatre and there was that rumpus about a blue plaque for Thora Hird,” said Shane.
“It was suggested that something could be done in the theatre and perhaps I should paint a blue portrait of Thora, then the idea just snowballed.”
Although primarily known as the designer of the Venus and Cupid sculpture on the prom, Shane began his career as a sign writer and fairground artist.
He painted many of the rides at the old Frontierland theme park including the carousel and ghost train.
SHANE has agreed to paint one more portrait to go alongside Eric and Ernie, Stan and Ollie, Dame Thora and Albert.
