Eating Out: You’ll enjoy The View
Michael Bebb, owner of The View cafe on central promenade.
Morecambe needs more places like The View.
The new retro cafe on the promenade is pleasing on the eye both inside and out, spotlessly clean with a quirky theme, and in the ideal location for its name overlooking our best asset of the Bay.
The View is chic, lightly decorated and fresh but still somehow down-to-earth and traditional. And it’s the perfect location for a light lunch, cooked breakfast or maybe a cup of Atkinsons tea and a slice of jammy sponge cake just like gran used to bake.
I popped in for lunch one recent Sunday lunchtime with my family.
As a nostalgia buff, I love how the past drips from The View’s every pore. Dozens of small black vinyl records are stuck to the counter front. A gramophone in the corner spins out dreamy Motown classics.
Dot-patterned table cloths and framed black-and-white photos of bygone Morecambe nod to the town’s golden era. And the rack of vintage clothes for sale shows that while The View is ostensibly an eating place, it’s also partly a shop.
The menu itself is very much for lighter appetites, with a fine choice of soups, salads, oven-baked jacket potatoes, wraps and sandwiches. The food was served speedily and well-presented, with cheery owner Michael Bebb a hands-on presence.
Michael shared tales of how his customers have kindly donated him throwback items like a ‘50s Bush wireless and a priceless signed Sinatra record to add to his time machine treasure trove.
Running a cafe is a new venture for Michael, who moved to town last summer, and there were signs The View is still a work in progress. For example, there were no card payment facilities yet. Having said that, paying with cash is quaintly throwback in itself.
My three-sausage salad came with walnuts which I didn’t expect as there was no warning on the menu.
Still, the food was tasty and filling, with my youngest son giving high marks for his crispy cheese and chicken panini. And the surroundings were so laid-back I could have happily stayed all day.
The stresses of modern life can sometimes be overwhelming.
So why not take time out, remember those days of simpler pleasures, and take in The View.
