THE former principal of the Adult College in Lancaster, Peter Garrod, has been awarded an OBE for services to further education.
Mr Garrod was head of Lancashire Adult Learning Service between 2006 and 2011 and is now a further education consultant.
The 59-year-old said: “It was a big surprise but after having worked in adult learning for 30 years it is nice to be recognised for the work I have done.”
The service is maintained by Lancashire County Council and has a national reputation for quality and for the diversity of provision.
Mr Garrod has a breadth of experience across the education sector. In his earlier career he worked in further education, for Handsworth College and also for East Birmingham College before joining Birmingham Adult Education Service in 1990. In 1993 he moved to the North West to become principal of the Adult College in Lancaster.
He played a major role in the subsequent development of Lancashire Adult Learning – culminating in his current appointment.
Mr Garrod, who lives in Wray and is married to Hazel with two daughters, Kirsty and Zoe, will be collecting his OBE in the next six months.
