Olympic athlete Beckie Kershaw helped staff and pupils open the newly-refurbished Morecambe Bay Primary School after a £5m makeover.

The Lancaster water polo star, who represented Team GB at the London Games, joined David Morris MP and Lancashire County councillor Susie Charles at the opening last Friday (December 7).

Work to modernise the 110-year-old Edwardian building on Euston Road began in 2009. The school remained open throughout.

“The renovation beautifully combines the old and the new, and the results are very impressive indeed,” said Co Coun Charles.

“The school is now a true 21st century learning environment for children from central Morecambe and I am sure current and future pupils will reap the rewards for years to come.”

Siobhan Collingwood, head teacher, said she was delighted to welcome Beckie Kershaw to the opening.

“Building up to this event we have been talking to the children about how Olympic values can inspire them to rise above their disadvantages and have high aspirations.

“We have taken the initials of our school to form Team MB and are telling the children inspirational stories of the athletes from Team GB.”
