Last week I received an email from the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP. Jeremy explained to me that as a priority, he will be starting a process to turn around failing hospitals that Labour did not confront.
There will be a special measures regime put in place and detailed improvement plans for each of the 11 hospitals which the Government has placed into special measures. I welcome this and will work with the Secretary of State over the coming months.
Also, last week Jeremy announced that there will be £1billion of IT funding for hospitals as well as primary care. This money will support the Government’s vision for a paperless NHS by 2018 and deliver critical improvements in safety, productivity and the patient experience over the next three years.
I’d like to draw your attention to the fact that the consultation into the proposed closure of Skerton High School opens soon. I urge the whole community to support me in my campaign to keep Skerton High School open.
You can do this by writing directly to the consultation via Lancashire County Council and also there will be a consultation event on October 9 which you will be able to attend. I will give you further details about this event as soon as I have them.
I also think it is well worth you writing to your local Lancashire County Councillor. It stands to reason that the more county councillors who oppose Lancashire County Council’s proposed closure of Skerton High School the better. Already I have received a large number of emails opposing the closure, so please do continue to email me.
On Friday I will unveil a plaque in memory of Dame Thora Hird, at the Eric Bartholomew pub in Morecambe. Thank you to John Hutson, the Chief Executive of JD Wetherspoon, for turning an idea into a reality. I hope the plaque will help future generations to remember Thora.
