Last week the Office of National Statistics released the latest unemployment figures.
I was pleased to see that even more people in Morecambe and Lunesdale are in work, in fact I did some comparisons and 385 more people are in work now than they were in December 2009, 464 more people are in work today than in April 2009.
A more recent comparison shows that 94 more people are in work than in March 2014. Nationally, Employment is up 283,000 on the quarter, the largest quarterly rise on record. Unemployment has reduced to 6.8 per cent which is the lowest level for five years. I am really pleased that more people here in Morecambe and Lunesdale are brining home a pay packet.
I was pleased to welcome the Skills and Enterprise Minister Matthew Hancock MP to Morecambe and Lunesdale last Thursday.
The Minister visited to officially open the newly refurbished Hexagon Building at Lancaster and Morecambe College. Matthew was also able to meet with some of the apprentices currently training at the college.
Later in the day, Matthew met some of EDF’s apprentices and Heysham 2 Station Manager Alan Oulton at Heysham Power Station. Matthew wanted to visit Heysham power station because he knows that I am very supportive of nuclear power and I’m actively campaigning for a new nuclear build at Heysham. Apprentices are very important to the power station and the hard working apprentices and all members of staff at Heysham Power Station play a key role in improving our local economy.
Don’t forget Thursday is the European elections, please don’t waste your vote, you can find out more information by looking at Lancaster City Council’s website www.lancaster.gov.uk/elections-and-voting
