Violent crime falls by half

THERE were half the reported incidents of violent crime in Morecambe, Heysham and Carnforth on New Year’s Eve compared to last year.

Sgt Dave Forshaw of Morecambe police said there were only five “minor assaults” reported in the area, three of which were in the town centre itself, compared to 10 violent crimes during New Year’s Eve festivities in 2010/11.

Twenty-nine people were arrested between New Year’s Eve evening and 8am on New Year’s Day, which Sgt Forshaw said was about the same as the equivalent period last year.
