A BUNGLING thief was captured on CCTV stealing from a van parked outside a CCTV firm.

Thirteen CCTV cameras recorded Matthew Taylor using a rock to smash a window in the van.

He then stole a hat, an iPod and an iPod docking station.

Police later recognised him from the images and arrested him.

Nicola Weatherill, of Bay Camera and Communications on White Lund, Morecambe, said: “Talk about thick, every angle of the building is covered and it was broad daylight.

“The guy came round on a bike and checked the van out.

“He then looked round the site and threw a rock three times at the window.

“He got into the glovebox and took a hat, an iPod and an iPod docking station.

“You couldn’t mistake the bike which had bright yellow handlebars.

“At 8am we came into work and rang the police to tell them we had it all on camera.

“The police came round and knew who it was straight away.”

Police said they arrested Matthew Taylor, 25, of Hubert Place, Lancaster, on June 28, three days after the theft and he was charged with theft from a motor vehicle, going equipped to break into a motor vehicle and possession of a Class B controlled drug.

He appeared at Lancaster Magistrates court on June 29 and pleaded guilty.

Magistrates sentenced him to a community order for 18 months with a six month drug rehabilitation requirement, a supervision order for 18 months and forfeiture of the equipment and the Class B drug.

He was also ordered to pay compensation of £323. No order for court costs was made.
