One of the country’s most wanted fugitives has been arrested.
Brian Thexton, 37, from Durham, was named as one of 13 men wanted by the National Crime Agency earlier this month and was thought to be in Spain.
He fled from police in Lancaster following a traffic stop on November 15, during which an officer was injured.
Mr Thexton was arrested shortly before 8pm last Tuesday at a rural property near Kirkby Stephen.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Slattery said: “Detectives from Cumbria Constabulary have worked hard with other police forces in the North of England over recent weeks to track down and arrest Thexton.
“After a uniformed policing operation he was detained without incident at an isolated rural property.
“We would like to thank the community of North Cumbria for their support and can assure them that our county is not and will not become a safe haven for organised criminals.”
Brian Thexton was wanted for robbery and allegedly conspiring to supply cocaine, police said.
