A MAN has gone on trial accused of causing the deaths of a Lancaster couple in a car crash near Dumfries.

Joan and Steven Machell, both 63, from Scotforth, died in March last year after they collided with a car driven by Kevin McCrindle on the A75 from Gretna to Dumfries.

Mr McCrindle, 37, of Grieve Walk in Dumfries, denies the charge of death by dangerous driving.

He also denies driving at an excessive speed for “prevailing conditions” and going on to the wrong side of the road in an attempt to overtake other cars.

Dr Joan Machell worked at the University of Lancaster as an education research fellow and her husband Steven Machell was a retired design and technology teacher who taught at Baines School in Poulton for 16 years.
