AN immensely popular businessman has died just days after being subjected to a terrifying armed robbery at his home.

Steve Weatherhead, owner of Rita’s Cafe in Morecambe, had bravely battled a brain tumour for 16 months, undergoing operations and more than 30 courses of chemotherapy since being diagnosed in September 2010.

Mr Weatherhead, 54, had borne his illness with characteristic courage and humour, raising thousands of pounds for cancer charity the Rosemere Foundation while fighting the disease.

But the charismatic cafe boss, who lived in a lodge at Northside Caravan Park, Carnforth, was the victim of a horrifying ordeal at his home just over a week before his death.

Mr Weatherhead was left badly shaken after a gang of four masked intruders forced their way into the lodge, threatened him and his brother Lee Robinson, forced Mr Robinson down onto the floor and demanded money.
