Police have launched an investigation after a man died in a flat blaze.

The fire broke out at a flat in Marine Road East, Morecambe this evening and Lancashire police confirmed that one man has died.

A police spokesman said: “There has been a fatal fire in a flat in Morecambe this evening.

“We were alerted at 6.30pm and we are literally in the very early stages of an investigation.”

Fifteen fire fighters and three crews from Morecambe and Lancaster fire service tackled the fire.

A spokesman for the fire service confirmed they discovered a body in the burning building and that they are working with the police to determine the cause of the blaze.

They said: “We were called at 6.19pm tonight.

“Six fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and found someone that they thought was dead.

“Their initial instinct was confirmed by paramedics who pronounced him dead.
