THE name of the woman who is to become the district’s new mayor was announced at a recent meeting of Lancaster City Council.

Sheila Denwood was selected as mayor-elect at the full city council meeting and will take over from Coun Paul Woodruff in May.

Coun Denwood will have represented Scotforth West for Labour for 17 years by then.

The fourth generation of a Lancaster family, she follows in the footsteps of her father-in-law, the late Charles Denwood, who was mayor from 1967 to 1968.

Her daughter, Tina Richardson, will be mayoress.

Twelve years after being deputy mayor to Coun Edna Jones, she said she will be proud to be mayor in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year and also Olympics year.

And if the city’s bid is successful, she will be the first Lord Mayor of Lancaster.
