PLANS for a Morecambe Beach Olympics to coincide with this summer’s London Games have collapsed.
Organisers confirmed their proposed “Olympiadathon” fun weekend of beach games, raft and bathtub racing, and a charity ball will not happen as planned on August 4 and 5.
Ian Hughes, head of the community team hoping to run the Olympiadathon, blamed Lancaster City Council, claiming they had put “numerous barriers” in their way and “refused repeated meetings” about the mini-festival.
Mr Hughes also said the Olympiadathon “could not possibly compete” with the city council’s own Games-themed sports festival on June 23 and 24, the same weekend as the famous Olympic torch passes through the district.
But the city council disputed Mr Hughes’ claims.
A spokesman said there was no reason why the beach games and torch celebrations could not both go ahead.
