Coronation Street stars with links to the Lancaster area have been paying tribute to Anne Kirkbride.

The actress, who played Deirdre Barlow on the ITV soap for 43 years, died of cancer on Monday, aged 60.

Kate Ford, who plays her screen daughter Tracy and who went to Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale, tweeted: “Heartbroken at the loss of my friend and beautiful on screen mummy. The most crazy funny 100 per cent
human. My life was enriched by her.”

Morecambe actress Cherylee Houston, who plays Izzy Armstrong, tweeted: “So so sad, so sad. RIP Annie, I thoroughly enjoyed your company.”

And Helen Worth, who grew up in Morecambe and who plays Gail McIntyre, said: “She used to hug everybody, and I will miss those very much indeed.”

The cast is due to pay tribute to Kirkbride on the National Television Awards on ITV tonight (January 21).
