The daughter of comic genius Eric Morecambe graced the rooms of The Midland Hotel during a recent stay.
Gail Stuart was in the area to officially open the Eric Morecambe hide at RSPB Leighton Moss in Silverdale.
However, when Gail called to check into the hotel, the staff had no idea that the daughter of a comedy legend was coming to stay in the very town from which he took his stage name.
“Whilst taking a booking from Mrs Stuart, she told me that the purpose of her stay was to officially open the new Eric Morecambe hide at Leighton Moss,” explained English Lakes Reservations manager Maria Walker.
“I was intrigued and so we got chatting before she finally revealed who she was.
“Talking to Eric Morecambe’s daughter made me feel very nostalgic and privileged to be booking a room for her.”
With staff bowled over by their latest arrival, they persuaded Gail to take part in a specially arranged video interview to talk about the family’s home town, the hotel and her famous father.
Speaking fondly of childhood memories of Morecambe and Lancaster, Gail said: “The last time I stayed at the hotel was for the unveiling of the statue of my father.
“It now looks so different and is absolutely incredible – I keep expecting to run into Poirot so you must get David Suchet here!
“The rooms are quirky and the inside is amazing.”
And on her father’s legacy she added: “On my last visit I sat in a tea shop nearby to the statue and he wasn’t on his own for a second.
“If he hadn’t loved his place of birth, I think he would have said that he wasn’t going to call himself Morecambe.”
Maria added: “It was lovely the way Mrs Stuart spoke about her father, and there was a very funny, unprompted twist of comedy at the end.
“I would like to say a big thank you to Gail for her time and for bringing sunshine to my Saturday.”
The Eric Morecambe hide at RSPB Leighton Moss is now officially open.
