For a friendly and atmospheric pub restaurant look no further than Slyne Lodge.
Located on Main Road between Lancaster and Slyne-with-Hest, Slyne Lodge is owned by Marcus and Emma Dorow with Emma’s father Martin Crabtree.
The pub say they pride themselves on sourcing produce from within a 30 mile radius of the pub to reinvest in the local community.
Keen to try the food on offer, my partner and I arrived on a busy Saturday night, not having booked a table, but the friendly waiter promptly led us to one right next to the fire, which was welcome on the cold evening.
Menus were brought to the table tout-de-suite and we were impressed with the choice of starters, mains and speciality dishes.
I plumped for sweet chilli prawns served on garlic bread and my partner chose Morecambe Bay potted shrimps.
When the plates came the portions were more than generous and smelt delicious.
The sweet chilli sauce on the prawns had a real kick to it but the sweetness and hotness went perfectly with the prawns. My partner’s potted shrimps were delicious, he said, pan fried and accompanied with a toasted English muffin.
I’m a chicken lover so for my main course I chose Hell’s Chicken.
My partner chose the Lamb Jennings.
The chicken was stuffed with brie, wrapped in smoked bacon and was served with a creamy chilli and Jennings ale sauce. I opted for chips instead of wedges as stated on the menu and the staff were happy to accommodate.
I liked the fact that there was a separate small jug of sauce if you wanted more than was on the plate.
The chicken was beautifully moist, perfectly cooked and the brie wasn’t at all overpowering as it can be sometimes.
The crunchy chips were a fabulous accompaniment and the side dish of vegetables, which could have been bigger for two people, were adequate.
The Lamb Jennings my partner had simply fell off the bone and was extremely tender. As he wasn’t keen on having mashed potato, he opted for chips as well, which again the staff were more than happy to accommodate.
We couldn’t fault the staff who were chatty and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.
Although we should have been full after two courses, I think a meal isn’t complete without a dessert. We asked for the sweet menu and although it wasn’t huge, there was enough on there for most tastes.
I went for the toffee crunch pie and my partner chose profiteroles.
The profiteroles were served in a huge ice-cream glass and my toffee crunch was plated up with a separate jug of cream - very naughty.
The toffee crunch pie had a wicked chocolatey base, a vanilla mousse/cheesecake type filling and delicious bits of crispy toffee. With the cream poured over, it was divine – a delicious dessert and recommended.
My partner tucked into his profiteroles but was a little disappointed with them as the cream inside them seemed to be frozen.
There were only four or five profiterole balls and lots of chocolate sauce but he is used to a huge mound.
He felt his dessert was a little disappointing and having a taste of mine, agreed the toffee crunch was better.
However, this was the only fault with the meal – the rest was perfect.
We both enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the dining area, which had leather backed chairs and a Greek style tiled floor.
We never felt hurried with our meal and it was a pleasure to eat there.
We paid less then £50 for a three-course meal for two which I think is very reasonable.
The restaurant caters for families adequately and seemed busy, which is always a good sign. Slyne Lodge might be a bit out of the way but it’s worth a visit and the food is excellent.
