David Morris column: Busy year in politics

David Morris, Morecambe and Lunesdale MP

Here’s a look back at some of the achievements here in Morecambe and Lunesdale during 2013.

In January I received confirmation from the then Cabinet Member for Transport on Lancashire County Council, Tim Ashton (Conservative, Fylde) that the county council would install warning lights at StPeter’s School in Heysham. By September these lights were installed.

February brought £490,000 to the constituency when Morecambe Bay Partnership received funding from the Coastal Communities Fund.

March saw the Government announce Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station will be built, which rubber stamped the Government’s support for new nuclear builds. Great news for Heysham.

In April, local company Rinicom received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

May saw Police Minister Damian Green MP announce that crime in Lancashire has reduced. The Lord Chancellor Rt Hon Chris Graylng MP visited the constituency too.

In June, after I campaigned against so many wind farm developments, the Government announced new planning guidelines taking into account the feelings of communities.

In July I worked with James Wharton MP and the PM to bring the EU Referendum Bill to the House of Commons.

During August I travelled all over the constituency on my annual summer tour.

September saw Sport England give £100,000 to the constituency and I ran from Alexandra Barracks to the Eric Morecambe Statue with Private Scott Farmer. Also, Dame Thora Hird was finally honoured in Morecambe.

October saw me introduce my Gibraltar Maritime Bill into the House of Commons.

In November, pupils from Skerton Community High School came to London and visited Parliament and presented their petition to Downing Street.

December was a particularly exciting month when
the Prime Minister visited F Edmondson International Furniture Transport on White Lund to announce that the Heysham M6 Link Road will be built.

As you can see, it has been a busy year in politics. Here is to another busy year in 2014.
