From Sunday the personal tax allowance has increased to £10,000 which is great news and means that you don’t have to pay tax on the first £10,000 of your earnings.
This rise will lift around 402 people in Morecambe and Lunesdale out of income tax and means that more than 4,000 people will be lifted out of income tax altogether.
Since 2010 the typical taxpayer has paid around £705 less which is quite a saving for hardworking people. The personal tax allowance will again increase to £10,500 next year which I think is good news.
I have been very disappointed that our Labour led County Council and City Council has increased Council tax, this is really disappointing news especially as the Government has made in the region of £500 Million available to councils that freeze Council Tax.
Government figures suggest that 251 councils have frozen council tax this year, sadly not Lancaster or Lancashire, if you agree with me I suggest you write to your local councillor to express your disappointment.
Last week Lancashire County Council announced it will close Skerton Community High School, this is terrible news for the local community and I am incredibly disappointed with the County Council for taking this drastic step.
As I said when Paul O’Gorman interviewed me on BBC Radio Lancashire on Thursday, there were three thousand plus people opposed to the school closing and only around ten people who wanted the school to close. If Skerton had been left alone, academic standards would have risen.
Please remember the deadline for expressions of interest for the Coastal Communities Fund is April 30.
