Barry Roche’s column: Festive period real disappointment

I don’t think the fixture list could have given us three tougher games over the festive period.

Three games in six days is tough going especially against sides like Fleetwood, Chesterfield and Bradford.

Having said that, to only come out of those games with two points to show for our efforts is disappointing to say the least.

The Fleetwood game played out like so many have done already this season.

We didn’t do enough to win the game but it’s a game we definitely shouldn’t have allowed ourselves to lose.

The least we should have come away with is a clean sheet and a draw.

Getting my usual ‘warm’ welcome at former club Chesterfield is something I always look forward to but we never made the extra man count for the last half an hour.

Overall a point there isn’t a bad result but we could and should have done a bit more to make it three.

Maybe people might disagree seeing as though we were at home but I see the draw against Bradford as a very good point.

They are a club with a squad and budget far bigger than ours and for the first half we were the better side.

We did have to dig deep against the wind after the break but the lads defended brilliantly to get us an excellent clean sheet.

There still has been a lot of talk in the media regarding a winter break but I couldn’t disagree more.

The festive fixture list brings so much excitement and great games with all the games so close to each other and it would be a real shame for English football if it were to lose that.

Congratulations to the Morecambe Ladies team who have reached the FA Cup third round for the first time after an excellent 6-3 win over Liverpool Feds on Sunday.
