Barry Roche column: It was great to get win we deserved

I was gutted to miss Saturday’s win against Barnet.

The knock I took in the cup against Rochdale flared up again on Thursday and all the swelling where I got kicked drained down into my ankle leaving me with very little movement in the ankle.

However, it was great to see the lads put in such a great performance and get the result such a performance deserved unlike midweek against Accrington where 3-0 or 4-0 wouldn’t have flattered us at all.

We have been starting games really brightly for the most part lately and getting those two early goals on Saturday gave us a great platform to go on and win the game.

We have felt, with the displays we have been putting in, that it was only a matter of time until we recorded a resounding victory and thankfully it came sooner rather than later.

The whole team put in a great shift and although Barnet certainly weren’t the strongest side we’ve faced at the Globe this season the lads were very professional throughout.

I have to give credit to Richard Brodie as well for his two spot kicks.

After his miss against Accy it would have been easy for him to pass on the responsibility to someone else but there was no doubt in his mind before the game that if we were awarded a penalty then he was taking it.

That takes character and he dispatched them both brilliantly.

As for Edgar Davids I don’t know if his inclusion in the Bees side is a help or a hindrance for them.

Don’t get me wrong, he was a world-class player in his day but on Saturday it looked like he was playing wherever he wanted on the pitch and spent an awful long time moaning and criticizing those around him.

And from what I gather, the Barnet boys weren’t really responding to him.

But at the end of the day who am I to judge Edgar Davids!
