A fire at Lancaster police station on Saturday night was caused by an electrical fault.

Fire crews from Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Hornby, Fulwood, Preston, Silverdale, Preesall, Cumbria and Hyndburn were called to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 9pm.

The blaze began in a third floor office. The fire was extinguished at around 11.45pm. Staff were evacuated and there were no injuries.

The fire caused minor damage to two offices on the third floor.

Neighbouring roads were closed to traffic on Saturday night and diversions put in place.

Chief Inspector Ian Cooper, of Lancaster Police said: “I’d like to reassure the public that this hasn’t affected our ability to police Lancaster and Morecambe over the last 24 hours as we have contingency plans to deal with such events, as rare as they are.

“The police station desk remains open to the public and all staff who usually work at Lancaster continue to do so.”
