A CARER has been jailed for 12 months for stealing thousands of pounds from a pensioner she was looking after.

Daleen Van-de-Sande, 24, of Denny Avenue, Lancaster, had been working at a care home in Halton, when she used Patricia Wiper’s own cheque book to remove more than £11,000 from her bank account.

The thefts were discovered by a relative who was settling Patricia’s affairs following her death at the age of 83 in 2009.

Van-de-Sande pleaded guilty to theft at an earlier hearing and appearing at Preston Crown Court on MOnday, was jailed for a year.

PC Peter Bennett, Lancaster police, said: “This crime is probably one of the most heartless crimes I have had to investigate. Patricia, who was known as Trixie to her friends and family, put her trust in Van-de-Sande, and sadly died before the theft was discovered.

“When families make the difficult decision to place their family members in residential homes, they should be able to do so in the full knowledge that they will be safe in a loving, caring environment. Sadly, on this occasion, this was not the case.”
