Surprise at ferry firm quit threat

THE Isle of Man Steam Packet company may pull out of Heysham and switch services to Liverpool.

If the Steam Packet withdrew services it would be a major blow to Peel Ports-owned Heysham at a time when it is looking forward to the building of the M6 Link Road, which would make it a more attractive option for hauliers. Seatruck, another major operator at Heysham, is expanding its services on the Irish Sea with plans to introduce new, larger ships this year.

Jonathan Barker, president of Lancaster District Chamber of Commerce, said the Isle of Man government had backed the campaign for the Heysham-M6 Link Road, so the Steam Packet’s threat was “a bit of a surprise”. Mr Barker added: “In the short term it may be a bit of a problem but in the long term when the road is built I don’t see it being as much of an issue.”
