THE first sod of earth could be dug on the M6 link road in July if the Secretary of State for Transport gives the green light.

Patrick McLoughlin MP is currently mulling over the £123m scheme and will announce his final decision by March 19.

Construction could start in July and the road could open in December 2015, say Lancashire County Council.

The two-lane dual carriageway, which is estimated could create 3,000 jobs on construction alone, would link the Heysham bypass by Lancaster and Morecambe College with the M6 at junction 34.
