One of the region’s longest-standing businesses has closed after more than 60 years serving Lancaster and Morecambe - with the loss of up to 25 jobs.

Bosses at Capstick Waste Management Ltd, based on White Lund Industrial Estate, put the ‘difficult’ decision to fold the firm down to three reasons.

The company said: “Unfortunately escalating landfill costs, government-imposed landfill tax increases and the recent recession has impacted on the viability of recovering recycling from general waste.”

The family-run business launched in the early 1950s.

It reached its peak during the late 1990s, when it was providing businesses, schools, hospitals and the manufacturing industry with waste management and recycling services.

The company’s statement continued: “The family has worked tirelessly during the last two years to maintain provision of a reliable and environmental-conscious service impeded by the demands of government legislation and decreasing recycling markets.

“Company directors Les and Margaret Capstick wish to express their regret at the closing of one of the area’s oldest businesses.”
