A new supermarket near Morecambe Football Club’s ground will create up to 350 full-time jobs – if it goes ahead.
Cheshire-based developers Ashall Property want to build a new food store on land close to the Globe Arena on Westgate.
A supermarket operator has not been confirmed but talks are continuing with a number of retail chains, say Ashall.
The site is a triangular piece of land in the area opposite Regent Leisure Park and Westgate Caravan Park, located between the stadium and the railway line.
Ashall Property has a development agreement with the current owners of the land, a brother and sister.
“At a time when jobs and investment are critical to Morecambe, a site like this should not be sitting empty as it has done now for years,” said Scott Ashall from Ashall Property.
“A foodstore can deliver much needed jobs and investment to Morecambe now, when it needs them most.
“As well as the 350 full-time, permanent jobs within the supermarket, construction jobs would also be created and we fully expect local businesses to benefit from increased trade during and after construction.
“We will be speaking to local residents and neighbours, including the football club, caravan parks and West End businesses.
“Anyone with an interest in the development will be able to consider the proposed scheme and provide their feedback.”
Following public consultation, Ashall expect to submit a planning application later this year.
Planning permission was recently granted for Marston Inns to build a pub/restaurant on land closer to Christie Way, the road leading to the Globe Arena.
