A windfarm is to be built on land south east of Heysham.

Three new wind turbines will appear on farmland near Heysham in the next few months.

The Heysham South Wind Farm will be built on agricultural land south east of the town.

BT has secured a 15-year deal to purchase electricity generated by the windfarm, situated east of Heysham Golf Club and south of the A683, worth around £40m.

BT has also signed Power Purchase Agreements with two other wind farms in Scotland and Wales. The deals will secure more than 100 Megawatts of renewable energy for its UK operations.

Developers The Banks Group Ltd will start construction of the Heysham South wind farmover the next few months.

Rob Williams, BT’s head of energy supply, said: “These large-scale, long term agreements are a vote of confidence in UK renewable energy and support BT’s continued commitment to securing all its electricity from renewable sources.

“They not only give us long-term price certainty but enable us to support local economies in which we operate, with the ‘New to the Planet’ agreements in Lancashire and Wales underpinning the construction of these two new wind farms.”

Lancaster City Council granted planning permission for the turbines in October 2012.
