TOWN councillors have defended their spending on festivals after they approved nearly £80,000 of funding on next summer’s season of events.
Councillors had received criticism for plans to cut Morecambe’s festivals budgets but after consulting with promotors they have increased planned spending.
The plans were rubber stamped at a full council meeting at Morecambe Town Hall last Thursday evening.
At the meeting, festivals and events committee chair, Coun June Ashworth said: “Budget restrictions meant we couldn’t support all applications in full.
“Applications from providers totalled £100,000 and we had a £50,000 budget for festivals.
“We consulted with providers and have given financial support in a fair and unbiased way to 25 of them.
“We also have funding in partnership with Lancaster City Council for the Seaside Festival and have £5,000 for if the Red Arrows fly, and if they don’t the money will be given back to the town council.
“We are not cutting the budget but increasing it.”
