Four popular Morecambe festivals will receive full funding for 2016.

Organisers of the Morecambe Carnival, Vintage-by-the-Sea, the Seaside Fiesta and the Nice ‘n’ Sleazy punk event were told last week their grant applications to Morecambe Town Council have been accepted.

David Brayshaw, chairman of Morecambe Carnival committee, said: “Of course the money is important but equally important is having the backing of our town council.”

Mr Brayshaw criticised the town council earlier in the month when they did not automatically award the grant and instead asked for more information.

The decision to award funding was finalised at a town council festivals committee meeting last Thursday.

Morecambe Carnival will get £10,000, Vintage-by-the-Sea will receive £18,000, the Seaside Fiesta will be given £3,600 and Nice ‘n’ Sleazy £3,500.

Councillor Joshua Brandwood, vice-chair of the town council festivals and events committee, said: “We’re absolutely ecstatic that we have supported these great festivals and we are more than happy to get behind future events in Morecambe.”
