Body thought to be missing Silverdale man

A body recovered from Morecambe Bay yesterday is believed to be that of missing man Keith Smith.

Mr Smith, 64, of Challan Hall Mews, Silverdale was last seen at the Wheatsheaf pub in Beetham at about 2.15pm on Tuesday, March 13.

Mr Smith’s black VW Polo car was found abandoned on a car park on Shore Road, Carnforth on Friday (March 16) by a member of the public.

At At 7am yesterday the Morecambe RNLI hovercraft were called out and the body was brought ashore about two hours later after an operation which also involved Liverpool Coastguard, Arnside coast rescue team and the Bay rescue team.

The body was found in Keer Channel not far off Red Bank Farm or Morecambe Lodge.

Lancashire police said Mr Smith’s family had been informed and would be carrying out a formal identification in due course.
