It was a big week for Morecambe’s famous potted shrimp company as they scooped a surprise award and appeared on TV into the bargain.

Baxters Potted Shrimps won the Food Hero of the yearat the Lancashire Life and Cheshire Life Food and Drink Awards, which came as a complete surprise to the Baxter family.

Sue Nelson, who owns the Thornton Road-based firm with her brother Mark, said she had no idea they were even in the running to win until their name was announced at the glittering bash, held at the Manchester Hilton Hotel on Deansgate in the city.

Then on Thursday shop manager Mark Smith appeared on BBC1 antiques show Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, hosted by Morecambe’s own Paul Hayes.

In the popular daytime programme, Paul has to buy items and then sell them on, with profits going to charity, battling head to head in a race against time with fellow antiques professional Jonty Hearnden.

Baxters helped Paul in his quest by buying a magnificent bronze ornament of a shrimp!

Baxters first began producing potted shrimps in 1799.
