MORE than 200 children celebrated the Olympics with a special day of themed sporting activities.
Children from many of the district’s playschemes came together for the day at Salt Ayre Sports Centre last Wednesday (August 8).
Taking their cue from the success of Team GB in the Olympic Games, they tried their hand at activities including football, hockey, javelin, long jump and a team relay.
Coun Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and young people, said: “The Olympic Games is inspiring the nation and it was great to see so many young people emulating their heroes at this special day at Salt Ayre.”
The event was just one of the many activities organised during the summer holidays by Lancaster City Council. Hundreds of children have also been trying out the council’s Holiday Activity Programme and there’s still time to take part.
Places are available on many of the activities taking place between now and the end of the summer holidays and many of the sporting activities give youngsters the chance to try out some of the sports that have been wowing the nation at the Olympics. Sports on offer include water polo, tennis, beach volleyball, BMX biking, basketball, archery and cycling.
Other popular activities include bug hunts, dodgeball, raft building, ice skating and the chance to be a zoo keeper for the day.
