ONE Morecambe family believe they can raise £10,000 to buy the Venus and Cupid statue to save it from demolition.

Kathy Parkins and her two sons, David, 13, and Michael, 12, want the resort to come out and support them by giving £1 each to the cause.

Artist Shane Johnstone has vowed to pull down his mother and child sculpture on Valentine’s Day next year after Morecambe Town Council voted not to buy the monument.

Kathy, a chef, who lives in the West End and works in Newby Bridge said: “It’s something of a symbol for me as I’ve driven past it for the last three years on the way to and from work.”
