A YOUNG woman died of a suspected drugs overdose at last weekend's Kendal Calling Festival.
Attended by hundreds of people from the Lancaster and Morecambe area, the festival ended in tragedy for 20-year-old Katie Jones.

Katie (above) from Henllan in Wales was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on Friday night and, despite a brave fight, she sadly lost her life on Saturday night in the presence of her family.

In a moving statement Katie's family paid tribute to a girl who loved life: "Katie was fun-loving and vivacious and her life revolved around her family and friends, who loved her very much.

"This was the first time that Katie had ever been to a music festival. That Friday evening she left her mum, dad and brother, with whom she lived, with eager anticipation. Her closest friends say that Katie was not a regular drug user and they, and her family, are at a loss to understand why this tragedy has happened.

"Her family are keen to express their wholehearted gratitude to the emergency and medical services who tried their utmost to avoid this tragic end to a beautiful young life."

Andy Smith, of the Kendal Calling event, said: "As festival organiser and on behalf of the festival team, we are deeply saddened by the tragic incident on Friday night at what has otherwise been a hugely successful event. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends."

Blighted by heavy rain on Friday, the festival saw countless cars stuck in the quagmire and festival-goers wading through calf-high mud.

The sell-out event saw 4,000 people turn up to Grate Farm to see sets by Dizzee Rascal, Super Furry Animals, Glas-vegas and British Sea Power.

Amongst the lesser known acts from across the UK were Lancaster and Morecambe's own Seaside Riot, Kr!ss Foster and Obviously 4 Believers.
The highlight of the three-day festival was the 25-minute set by Scotland's Glasvegas.

However, fans who turned up to see The Long Blondes and The Mystery Jets went away disappointed as the two acts were forced to pull out.
