Forest firepower too much for Shrimps.

Morecambe's hopes of creating more Carling Cup shocks were dashed as they were beaten by an excellent Nottingham Forest side at the City Ground.

Wales international striker Robert Earnshaw scored twice and further strikes from Chris Cohen and Adam Newbold gave Colin Cameron's side a comfortable win.

Forest dominated the early stages and almost took the lead after just five minutes when Aaron Davies hit the post with a header from Luke Chambers's right wing cross but they didn't have to wait long for the opening goal when Chris Cohen struck home a 14th minute free kick from the edge of the area.

Morecambe looked to get back into the game with Fraser McLachlan drilling a shot high and wide on 29 minutes when he should have done better.

Sammy McIlroy's side started the second half sharply with James Perch foiling Garry Hunter with a last-gasp clearance and Rene Howe just failing to find the unmarked Wayne Curtis.

But as Morecambe looked at theirt strongest they conceded a second when Peach found Earnshaw on 62 minutes and he made no mistake from close range.

Two late goals then gave Forest a comprehansive victory as Adam Newbold struck home Cohen's square ball and Earnshaw gave the scoreline a flattering look a minute from time after running through on the Morecambe goal.

The Shrimps had late efforts from Michael Carr and Diarmuid O'Carroll but failed to score a consolation goal on a tough difficult night.
