MORECAMBE moved a step closer to Wembley with this dogged victory in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area semi-final.

The Shrimps booked a two-legged final against Grimsby wih goals from two former Bury players.

Ex-loan striker Matty Blinkhorn and former skipper Jon Newby scored the goals to win a game played in atrocious conditions.

Morecambe started the game strongly with Stewart Drummond coming close to opening the scoring in eight minutes with a close range left foot volley which beat Jim Provett but came back off the left hand post.

But the Shrimps were not to be denied for long with an opening goal a minute later.

Garry Thompson used his pace to make a break down the right hand side before providing a perfect cross for Matty Blinkhorn to produce a flying header past the stranded Provett.

Morecambe came close to adding a second five minutes later but were denied on two occasions by the sharp reactions of Provett.

The Bury keeper did well to block a well struck Thompson free kick and then showed great reflexes to block Simon Grand's follow-up when the home defender looked sure to score.

After a poor start Buy then came back into the game and despite the sodden conditions played some neat football.

Dave Challinor shot wide from distance and the busy Nicky Adams dragged an effort wide from the edge of the are.

Morecambe midfielder Drummond made a vital intervention to stop Ben Futcher's knock down reaching top scorer Andy Bishop who was lurking in the box.

The second half saw Bury start well and come close to equalising when Challinor headed an Adams cross against the crossbar before the busy Adams forced Scott Loach into a great save after a storming run into the box.

With six minutes to go Andy Mangan somehow missed an open goal after Brian Barry Murphy's free kick flashed across the Morecambe six yard box.

He was made to pay for the miss when Newby kept his cool in the final minute to round Provett and fire his side into the area final.
