Goals from Michael Twiss and Rene Howe secured a deserved win for the Shrimps against high-flying Brentford.

Twiss netted in the first half, seizing on a great ball from Fraser McLachlan to bear down on goal and crash a shot home.

And Howe sealed the points with a tap in after one of a series of superb run and crosses from the inspired Neil Wainwright as the final whistle approached.

The visitors could have been ahead in the very first minute when one-time Shrimps target Charlie MacDonald broke free on the right before clipping the ball across into the box.

Dave Artell fluffed a clearance and the ball reached Jordan Rhodes who turned and shot from ten yards to force a good low save from Barry Roche.

Then, after seven minutes Rene Howe flashed a header across goal from Wainwright's great cross that Ben Hamer had to palm wide.

Howe had an even better chance two minutes later drifting into the box to meet Craig Stanley's lofted pass but, with the goal at his mercy, he screwed his shot inches wide of the post.

As Morecambe continued to create openings Wainwright again swung in a good cross which was headed back across goal by Adam Yates forcing Hamer to collect smartly under pressure from Michael Twiss.

At the other end Roche maintained his fine recent form with a stunning diving save to deny Rhodes with another shot on the turn, this time after he'd been found by Sam Wood.

But the game was too open to remain goal-less for too long and it was the Shrimps who gained the upper hand after 23 minutes.

Fraser McLachlan won the ball with a determined tackle in the middle of the park then hit a first-time pass over the Bees' defence for Twiss to control on the run before lashing a left-footer past Hamer to give the home side a lead their early play had just about merited.

Wainwright was creating problems down the left and when one of his crosses was cleared for a corner Stanley whipped it in for Artell to glance a header inches wide.

Morecambe survived a couple of scares as half time approached but were just about value for their lead at the break.

And they were soon into their stride in the second half, Howe jumping just too early and failing to connect with yet another precise cross from Wainwright.

Bentley was booked when he connected with Hamer as he went for a loose ball following a Morecambe corner.

And the Shrimps skipper must have feared the worst when, second later, he left MacDonald flattened after a heavy challenge, referee Mr Hayward deeming a final warning the appropriate response.

Howe received Morecambe's second booking as he attempted to block a clearance from Mark Phillips.

Chances were more scarce in the second half with neither keeper really tested.

But as Brentford pushed men forward in search of an equaliser, Morecambe hit them with a sucker punch.

Stanley fed Man of the Match Wainwright down the left and he ran into the area before squeezing the ball across the six yard box for Howe to net the second from close range.

Howe was replaced by Aaron Taylor right at the end when it looked like he tweaked a hamstring.

But by then the game was won and Morecambe fans celebrated a seemingly unlikely win against a title-challenging side in good form.

Morecambe named an unchanged side for the fourth game in succession.

For their part Brentford again featured on-loan Ipswich striker, Jordan Rhodes, fresh from his 30 minute hat-trick in the Bees' superb away win at Shrewsbury on Saturday.
