YOUNG goalkeeper Scott Davies took the plaudits again with a star performance to foil play-off hopefuls Chesterfield.
Not for the first time in recent weeks, the 21-year-old kept his side in the game with a number of fine saves to add to his growing reputation.

Wembley winner Davies twice foiled Chesterfield's Jamie Ward in the first half after he got behind the Morecambe back four.

He also produced a superb second half stop to block Peter Leven's drive from the edge of the area which came at pace through a crowd of players to keep his side in the game.

He had to be alert throughout the first 45 minutes as Morecambe were consistently second best to a side that played some neat football and dominated the midfield.

Ward was denied in the second minute after being put through by the classy Leven and midfielder Derek Niven twice fired wide after making his way unmarked into the Morecambe box.

The Shrimps were second to every second ball and it came as no surprise when Chesterfield opened the scoring on 36 minutes when the former Bournemouth striker Steve Fletcher smashed an unstoppable shot past Davies from the edge of the area.

Two minutes later, Ward was through again but foiled by Davies and the half-time whistle could not come soon enough for the Shrimps.
The second half began with Jon Newby sacrificed in an effort to shore up the midfield and it worked a treat.

Damien Allen was the extra man and he should have marked his return to the side in the best possible way with a golden chance a minute after the restart which he volleyed wide when he really should have tested Barry Roche.

It was, however, a move that signalled a new-look Shrimps.

Wayne Curtis came close to equalising on 62 minutes with a low shot that beat the Chesterfield keeper but came back off the left-hand post.

Ten minutes later, Curtis was in the thick of the action again with an incisive reverse pass to Matty Blinkhorn and the striker made no mistake with a cool right-foot finish.

Blinkhorn almost doubled his tally a minute later with a great turn and volley which hit the side netting and Curtis saw a rasping shot deflected over the bar by Lloyd Kerry.

Fittingly it was Davies who had the final say in the game as he raced from his goal to save at the feet of Kerry as he broke into the box.

He also made a save from the same player's injury-time volley as the Shrimps secured their second home draw of the week.
