SHRIMPS net great win against Mariners
Check the League Two table

A STUNNING goal from Jon Newby inspired Morecambe to their fifth League Two victory of the season.

The former Liverpool front man scored his second goal of the week with a superb chip from the edge of the area that curled over Phil Barnes on 27 minutes.

It was a goal that delighted Newby, leading the line in place of the injured Matty Blinkhorn, who also scored in the midweek victory over Hartlepool.

He said: "It was one of the better goals I have scored I must admit. I saw the goalkeeper was off his line and it was always worth a go. It sat up nicely and I hit it just right and it was great to see it go in."

Newby's goal, and his link-up with fellow forward Michael Twiss, was one of a number of highlights as the Shrimps played some excellent football against Alan Buckley's struggling side and deserved their first win in five League games.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis made a good return to action with his Petr Cech-inspired skull cap protecting his recent head injury.

And in front of him, manager Sammy McIlroy's 4-3-1-2 formation looked like it suited the Shrimps as they dominated the midfield for long periods.

Craig Stanley, Garry Hunter and Damien Allen made up the three-man midfield with Carl Baker giving a roving role.

When Morecambe scored their second when Twiss headed home a superb Baker cross on 55 minutes, the game was as good as over.

Twiss was close to adding a third goal in the next move as the Shrimps carved an opening through a dispirited-looking Grimsby defence but saw his snapshot well saved by Barnes low to his left.

The Shrimps were playing some of their most fluent football of the season and the Grimsby crowd were baying for their manager's blood.

But then Allen's poorly-advised backpass gifted Grimsby sub Andy Taylor a goal and suddenly the game changed.

>> Formation 'worked a treat'

Grimsby, with the crowd now behind them, enjoyed their best period of the game and put the Shrimps on the back foot for the first time.

Tom Newey curled a dangerous free-kick just wide and the threatening Taylor zipped a shot past Lewis' right-hand post.

Ciaran Toner sidefooted a right-foot shot weakly into the side netting as the home side went for an equaliser.

But their comeback efforts were derailed by the sending off of Danny Boshell for an over the top tackle on Adam Yates.

The Shrimps then kept the 10 men at bay comfortably with only a late Toner volley causing any problems as McIlroy's side clinched a welcome three points to round off a good week.
