WHEN a goal is described as being "the best in Europe'' on an evening of Champions League football you know it must be something special.
And special is the right and proper way to describe Garry Hunter's 90th-minute winner for the Shrimps in this amazing game at Blundell Park.

Hunter scored the goal of his career so far with a sensational volley from Michael Twiss's corner from just outside the edge of the area, using skill fit for a world stage, to complete a remarkable comeback for Sammy McIlroy's side.

The Shrimps had been 2-0 with an hour played as relegation-threatened Grimsby played far better than the league table suggested despite being reduced to 10 men after 40 minutes when Chris Llewellyn was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Adam Yates.

>> Was Hunter's goal the best ever Morecambe goal?

The Shrimps started well enough with Stewart Drummond glancing a header just wide after four minutes from Yates's cross and Diarmuid O'Carroll, in for the injured Rene Howe, just failing to connect with a dangerous Neil Wainwright cross.

But from there Grimsby, who had won just four games all season, dictated the pressure and played some good football.

They should have taken the lead on the break after 15 minutes when Nathan Jarman was put through by Adrian Forbes but, with only Barry Roche to beat, he hit the post from 15 yards.

The home side did take the lead, however, when Drummond was robbed of possession in the middle of the park by the busy JP Kalala.

He fed veteran former Blackpool striker Forbes down the middle and he slipped the ball under Roche for a cool 21st minute strike.

Grimsby's nightmare season continued however when well on top Llewellyn produced a crazy tackle deep in the Morecambe half and saw red.

Despite that, Grimsby continued to look the livelier side and Roche had to make two decent saves from Dean Sinclair before the break.

But he had to pick the ball out of the net a second time on 56 minutes when Nick Hegarty's excellent run ended with a square pass for Forbes to score from eight yards.

That prompted McIlroy to bring on new signing Mark Duffy as the Shrimps regrouped and put more bodies forward. And they were given a lifeline on 62 minutes when Wainwright delivered a cross to the far post and Twiss headed home.

Twiss turned provider just a minute later but Wainwright got under the ball and headed over.

Morecambe were pressing for the equaliser and this time Drummond managed to get a shot on target that Phil Barnes had to parry clear before they drew level 10 minutes from time when O'Carroll stabbed the ball home from Duffy's lay-off.

O'Carroll had a chance to put his side ahead from a Drummond pass but he volleyed over when in a good position.

Morecambe forced a succession of corners as the final whistle approached and the pressure paid off in spectacular fashion in the final minute.
