Furness BS (3D Sports) Northern League
MORECAMBE got back to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing win against Cumbrian rivals Barrow.
Fresh off their Twenty20 win the night before against Carnforth, Morecambe brushed aside Barrow, who boast four players from the Cumberland county side, as Vishal Goyal went out in style, playing his last game for his adopted club.
Electing to bat first, Barrow got off to a steady start before Allington fell caught behind off the bowling of Mashimbyi. Gates soon followed this up, snaring captain Wearing to leave the visitors 40-2 off 11 overs.
Young Cumberland all-rounder Miles then joined the prolific professional Wanasinghe and the two looked in little trouble as they progressed the score beyond the 100 mark.
By now Clough and Lee were operating in tandem as the batsmen tried to up the pace, but fine fielding and bowling meant the two batsmen had to take risks to increase the run rate.
Wanasinghe eventually succumbed to the pressure as he tried to make room to cut Clough but only succeeded in edging the ball behind to Edge.
Lee got in to the action picking up Livingstone and D'Leny soon after but Miles found an ally in Hefferman as the pair looked to progress the total beyond 200.
Miles eventually fell for 77 as he unsuccessfully took on Woodhead's throw from the deep, a fine effort from the youngster who showed shots all round the wicket.
The innings closed on 195-8 which both sides were probably happy with. All four bowlers used gave a fine account of themselves and the fielders also backed them up well with some fine out cricket and an almost perfect showing from Edge behind the wicket.
For the final time Woodhead and the departing Goyal opened the innings and it was Woodhead who was out of the blocks quickest as he bludgeoned professional Wanasinghe to the boundary with disdain, memorably hitting him for four consecutive boundaries in one over as he was particularly ruthless on the short ball.
At the other end Kemode got similar treatment from Goyal as he too took on the gauntlet driving forcefully on both sides of the wicket.
The pair passed 50 in just the sixth over and raced on to 85without loss in 13th before Woodhead was deceived by a googly of another Cumberland star, Livingstone.
Boucher also fell at the hands of Livingstone, caught behind, and he was replaced by new signing Ullah, ex-captain of Kendal. He played second fiddle to Goyal who had passed his 50 and was being willed on by everyone to sign off with a memorable century.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be, with only 13 needed to win, Goyal was left stranded in the middle after a mix up with Ullah, he was run out for 93.
The ovation the young Indian got from spectators and opposition alike showed the respect the Lancaster University student has earned over the three years.
His dominance at the wicket belied his size, but his strength and heart was there for all to see. He is a player that will certainly be missed both on and off the field.
Goyal's demise was soon followed by Ullah who played on to Allington and the unfortunate Smith also lost his wicket after being left stranded by Mahimbyi.
To atone for this Mashimbyi won the game after depositing a straight six off Livingstone who was the only shining light from a disconsolate Barrow bowling display.
A much improved performance with bat ball and in the field will give captain Clough hope for the rest of the season, this weekend sees Morecambe visit Kendal and on Sunday they have a trip to Leyland in the Thwaites Cup.
Morecambe's next game is the return Twenty20 game against Carnforth today (Wednesday 17) with the game starting at 6.30pm.
