IN the Westmorland County Football Association Junior Cup second round: Cartmel Reserves had a second chance to progress in the Cup after being re-instated after losing in the first game. Unfortunately they were drawn to play a very much stronger and more experienced Kendal United side.
The Kendal side played some very good football and deservedly opened up a 2-0 lead. Cartmel never gave up and with just 20 minutes remaining Cartmel struck back with a great goal scored by Alan Coulston. Despite mounting attack after attack the Kenda
l side held out to win by 2-1.

In the Premier Division of the Lancashire Honda North Lancashire and District League, the match of the day was between leaders Marsh United and second placed Storeys.

The game was played before a good sized crowd and brilliant sunshine. Both sides fielded weakened sides and the class of football showed that.
The first half was quite even, both sides created difficult chances, the best moment in the first half was in the 25th minute, Marsh broke up a Storeys attack and attacked themselves at speed, as they approached the penalty Jordan Connorton unleashed a terrific shot from 30 yards out.

The shot was heading into the right hand top corner before John Boothroyd made an out of this world finger tip save to turn the ball over the bar and in doing so injured himself.

As the ball went from end to end Storeys Adam Airey made a strong left wing run, his cross was perfect for an unmarked Steve Creed to head into the net after 41 minutes to give Storeys a lead they hardly deserved.

Marsh were only trailing for two minutes. On their next attack Marsh drew level when Alan Coulton's fierce shot beat Storey's keeper only for the shot to hit the inside of the upright before re-bounding and hitting a defender on the goal line and into the net.

The second half was much better for Marsh as they took the game to Storeys and started to dominate the game.

The better chances fell to the eager Marsh side but poor finishing and desperate defending kept them out.

But Marsh was not to be denied, as the Storeys defenders between them failed to clear the ball a half chance appeared for Peter Myerscough who took it much to the delight of his team mates.

Although on this second half performance the win was well deserved for the Marsh side, but they had to be alert whenever Storeys made quick break counter attacks.

Storeys now drop to third place three points behind Marsh.
TIC Dynamos went into second place after their good 3-0 win over Ingleton.

The opening 20 minutes belonged to Ingleton as they went allout looking for the early break through.

TIC withstood the early battering and hit back with goals from Mark Wiggins and Robert Goldsborough to lead by 2-0 at the break.

The second half saw TIC much the better team, but they could only score once more against a good but overworked defence, when Goldsborough scored his second and his sides third goal to run out well deserved winners by 3-0.

Carnforth Rangers won their fourth game on the run when they beat Morecambe Royals by 2-1.

Carnforth had to work hard before coming out on top in this fascinating game played between two good teams. Carnforth got off to the prefect start when they went in front after just two minutes.

After a strong opening attack they won a corner, as Lee Brade swung the ball into the penalty area Daniel Syson was quickest to react and he
headed the ball into the net to give his side the lead they were hoping for.

The rest of the half belonged to Carnforth but they continued to miss chance after chance but still held the lead at half-time.

The second half saw a big transformation in the game as the Royals started the second half on the attack putting Carnforth under a lot of pressure. But excellent defending especially by player/manager Peter Chippendale, Dean Threlfall and the experienced Tony Holmes kept the Royals at bay.

The Royals played some brilliant football resulting in stand-in keeper Alex Benson making a superb save to deny Joe Lambert. From the resulting corner the Royals equalised when Mark Plevey put the ball past his own keeper.

This spurred the Royals on and they went all out for another goal and had Carnforth hanging on. But as so often happens the Royals were caught out of position when a quick counter attack brought about another goal, a sublime pass from Brade which split the remaining Royals defenders found Steve Oliver who ran through to score what turned out to be the winner with the only chance of a very good second half.

Kirkby Lonsdale played better than they have done of late and fully deserved the one point gained against fifth placed Galgate.

Either side could have won the game as play flowed from end to end.

Joe Mather scored the goal for Kirkby with Steve McMinn scoring for Galgate. But Kirkby are going to have to play better if they are to move up the table.

In Division One Storeys moved to the top of the division for the first time this season when they beat former leaders Bolton-le-Sands by 2-1.

Storeys missing some key players due to first team calls played well and opened up a 2-0 lead with goals from veteran Paul Wood, Joe Flynn scored the second to put Storeys in the driving seat.

Bolton-le-Sands who had headed the table since the start of the season hit back with a good goal scored by Robert Powell, but it was not enough.

Freehold in third place narrowed the gap to two points behind Bolton-le-Sands but had to fight back after going behind to a battling Ingleton Reserves side that had beaten Freehold in their first meeting.

After a cagey opening to the game, Freehold went into a deserved lead when Jimmy Watters scored after 20 minutes, a lead they kept until half-time.

Within five minutes of the re-start Ingleton drew level, totally against the run of play when Robert Barker scored.

This spurred the young Ingleton side on and they went in front when Ben O'Hagan scored a good goal.

But Freehold are not in the habit of losing games and fought back to draw level with 20 minutes remaining.

Despite putting all the pressure on the Ingleton defence they could not make another break through and had to be satisfied with a draw.
Morecambe Royals Reserves are still waiting for their first win of the season.

Against fourth placed Millhead they showed some improvement to earlier performances, but the result was the same, another defeat, losing by 3-1.

The Royals appear to have lost all their confidence and were reluctant to have a shot at goal despite being in good positions.

Millhead, on the other hand, played really well and should have had more goals than the three it scored by Michael Reghilini and a brace from Matthew Palmer.

The goal scored by the Royals came as Millhead pushed everyone forward looking for more goals, they got caught out when Dan Edmonds scored his first goal of the season.

If they are going to escape from the lower reaches of the division they are to have to play much better.

In the Division Two Accrington Trophy Centre/Whiteside Cup 2nd Round, Carnforth Rangers Reserves outbattled Caton United Reserves to win by 3-2 and a place in the semi-final where they will be away to Westgate Wanderers.

Both sides played really well and often cancelled each other out. Both sides battled very well and in the conditions played some good football. Goals by young Antony Crabtree, James Rafferty and veteran Robert Hockham was enough to see off the Caton side who replied with goals by Dan Hurtley and Dave Falkener.

In the League, Furness Rovers moved threateningly into third place after beating a strong Bentham Reserves by 2-1.

Furness were by far the better side but missed enough chances to have won with ease.

The highlight of the game as far as Furness are concerned, apart from the three points was the performance of Joe Leslie, he recorded his 99th and 100th goal for his side with a terrific performance.

Thomas Burns replied for Bentham. Furness, have lost just one game so far this season, Bentham on the other hand have only won once.

Halton Rangers Reserves, despite losing unluckily to Arnside, moved off the bottom of the division on goal difference from Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves.

Halton often outplayed fifth placed Arnside but had no luck in front of goal.

They found themselves 2-0 behind when Arnside scored their goals from far fewer chances, the Smith brothers, Matthew and James scored the goals. Halton kept on playing decent football and got a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Chris Wright.

Although Halton pressed for an equaliser they were denied by some good defending as Arnside held out.

Torrisholme outplayed Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves and deservedly won 3-1 with Luke Suligowski (2) and Matthew Jackson scoring the goals. The third goal condemned Kirkby Lonsdale to bottom of the division on the goal difference of just one goal from Halton Reserves. David Banks scored the only goal for Kirkby.

In Division Three leaders Heysham increased their lead at the top when they came out on top against a very good Galgate Reserves side.

The result could have gone either way. Galgate created the better chances throughout the game, but for the second game running Heysham were indebted to their ace keeper Daniel Taylor, he made many super saves to deny the eager Galgate side. Jay Harrington gave Heysham a 1-0 lead at half-time. Heysham's second goal was cracker scored by Joel Crabtree.

Galgate never gave up and scored a good goal by Steve Morgan, but it was keeper Taylor who denied the draw that Galgate thought they deserved.

A strong Highgrove Colts continued its resurgent form with a tremendous 5-1 win over a good Boys Club Reserves side. The game was good to watch with both sides playing good football.

The opening goal came for the Colts after 33 minutes when Luke Ogley scored from 20 yards. To make matters worse for Boys Club he doubled his sides lead when the Colts broke out of defence for Ogley to get the final touch.

The second half was worse for Boys Club when they conceded three more goals scored by Liam Breslin, Matthew Humpage, Ogley proceeded to complete his hat-trick. John Norman got a consolation goal when he scored from the penalty spot.

Villa Royale won its local derby against Bolton-le-Sands Reserves by 1-0. The only goal of a good hard game was scored by Mitchell Dyson.

The villa side had most of the play and the best chances but found the Bolton-le-Sands defence in good form.

It still leaves Bolton-le-Sands anchored at the bottom of the division and the only side in the league without a point.

n The Lancaster Honda North Lancashire and District Football League 'Team of the Month Award' has been won by Division Three side Heysham - the only team to win three games in the month.
