MORECAMBE FC's plan to move to a new 7,000 capacity stadium at Westgate has cleared an important hurdle.
It had been thought the proposal would be 'called in' for further investigation by the Government.
The site had originally been designated as public open space on the city council's 'town plan' for Morecambe and the building of a new stadium there would run contrary to that plan.
In such cases the Government usually calls the application in to satisfy itself that new proposals that divert from town plans are permissable.
But the Government Office for the North West, which had been asked to judge whether the proposal needed to be 'called in' has said it's happy to let the plans progress without further consideration at Government level.
The city council sees it as a boost not just for the football club but also for that part of Morecambe and for the town as a whole, providing new leisure facilities, retail and hotel opportunities and employment potential.
